Galectin-1 Protein Description

Mouse Galectin-1, also known
as 14 kDa laminin-binding protein, 14 kDa lectin, Beta-galactoside-binding
lectin L-14-I, Lactose-binding lectin 1, Lectin galactoside-binding soluble 1,
S-Lac lectin 1 and LGALS1, is a secreted protein which contains one galectin
domain. Galectins are a family of structurally related carbohydrate-binding
proteins, which are defined by their affinity for
poly-N-acetyllactosamine-enriched glycoconjugates and sequence similarities in
the carbohydrate recognition domain. Galectin-1 / LGALS1 is expressed in
placenta, maternal decidua and fetal membranes. Within placenta, it is
expressed in trophoblasts, stromal cells, villous endothelium,
syncytiotrophoblast apical membrane and villous stroma. Within fetal membranes,
Galectin-1 / LGALS1 is expressed in amnion, chorioamniotic mesenchyma and
chorion (at protein level). Galectin-1 / LGALS1 is also expressed in cardiac,
smooth, and skeletal muscle, neurons, thymus, kidney and hematopoietic cells. Galectin-1
/ LGALS1 may regulate apoptosis, cell proliferation and cell differentiation.
It binds beta-galactoside and a wide array of complex carbohydrates. Galectin-1
/ LGALS1 inhibits CD45 protein phosphatase activity and therefore the
dephosphorylation of Lyn kinase. Galectin-1 / LGALS1 has demonstrated a diverse
range of activities in relation to cell survival and proliferation. In
different circumstances, it acts as a mitogen, as an inhibitor of cell
proliferation, and as a promoter of cellular apoptosis.
